Rock Star Runners
Team Cancer Sucks (TCS) is a self-described “endurance sports community on a mission” that blazes through trails, tracks, and courses, all in the name of kicking cancer’s butt. The team was founded in San Francisco, California in 2013 by five friends who wanted to use their passion for endurance sports to help cancer patients and their families directly.
Over the past four years, this team of five blossomed into a group of hundreds of participants and supporters. We are proud to be a TCS charity partner!
Tragedy and Legacy
A year after the team’s inception, tragedy struck. AJ, a TCS founder, was diagnosed with stage IV liver cancer, attributed to the hepatitis B virus he was born with. Shortly after his diagnosis, AJ passed away, leaving behind his wife and three children.
In 2015, TCS founders and friends created the AJ Strong Memorial Run to raise awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer, and to help those fighting the disease.
On April 1st, Team Cancer Sucks hosted the 3rd Annual AJ Strong Memorial 6.5K Run in San Francisco, complete with a potluck, health fair and lively music. Proceeds from this event benefit both Lazarex Cancer Foundation and SF Hep B Free. SF Hep B Free is a program created to eradicate the hepatitis B virus in the city of San Francisco.
Team Motto: Be About It
Team Cancer Sucks has adopted the motto “Be About It” for 2017, guided by the quote, “it is by acts and not ideas that people live.” While this may be their credo for 2017, it is a principle they have been following dating back to the team’s creation.
Since 2015, Team Cancer Sucks has raised over $23,000 for Lazarex Cancer Foundation, with donations coming in every week. We are thankful to be a part of this legacy of compassion and community activism that is changing lives.
