2010 Disney World Marathon Weekend

Lazarex Cancer Foundation - Team for Life was an official charity training program of the 2010 Disney World Marathon Weekend. The weekend consisted of a Family Fun 5k on Friday, January 8th, Half Marathon on Saturday, January 9th and Full Marathon on Sunday, January 10th.

Usually traveling down to Florida in January would mean a break in the cold weather, but this year that was most certainly not the case! This year Florida experienced all time record LOWS, as the temperature dropped to nearly 30 degrees in the morning on the 9th and 10th. It was the first time Lazarex brought a team to the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and it was a GREAT success!

All 82 participants completed the 13.1, 26.2 or even GOOFIER 39.3 miles despite record low temperatures and mostly everyone smiled all the way through the course! We had some folks get a personal best. Lowell Starr ran his first half marathon (1:59:19) and full marathon (4:55:08) all in the same weekend! We also had two first time marathoners, Katie Walls and Liz Heath (3:53:47) finish, rocking their Team for Life t-shirts and smiling!

Lazarex Cancer Foundation greatly appreciates all the participants who fundraised and took part in the event over this cold and frigid weekend in Orlando, FL. Our financial donations are directly related to the number of patients we can help. It’s events like the Disney World Marathon Weekend that give people a great opportunity to raise money!

Here are the event highlights:

  • 82 participants raised over $55,000.
  • Most participants were NOT from the Orlando area; two participants flew in from Micronesia and Brazil for the event!
  • Top Individual fundraisers: Kelly Slane raised $2,928, Shawn Hammerschmidt $2,881, and Arnez Nisperos $1,895
  • Top Group Fundraiser: Melissa and Michael Gardiner raised $7,390
