2009 Rock 'N' Roll San Jose ½ Marathon

Lazarex Cancer Foundation - Team for Life was an official charity training program of the 2009 Rock 'n' Roll San Jose  ½ Marathon

Early morning, cool but not cold, crisp, clear- a great morning for an endurance event. Over 12,000 people gathered to run or walk the 13.1 mile route through San Jose. Some called it a 13.1 mile party, “Dancing in the Streets” to live mini-concerts playing everything from “alternative to classic rock, punk, funk and blues”.  It was the first time for Lazarex to be a part of Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose; in fact we were one of three official charities present.

For the 25 Lazarex “Team for Life” ½ marathoners it was a time of anticipation, excitement and perhaps some doubt, as this was the 1st official long distance endurance event for many of our participants.  If there were any doubts they were put to rest as all “Team for Life” members crossed the finish line.  Coach Jenny Walls wore a smile of pride, joy and relief.  While she is not new to coaching she was there for the 1st time in her position as Endurance Event Coordinator for Lazarex Cancer Foundation.

We are deeply grateful and joyfully inspired by our new and old friends who continue to put themselves on the front line through many modes of fundraising efforts on behalf of Lazarex.  Every dollar raised helps us fulfill our mission to help those with end stage cancer.  While money fuels our bank account and our patients’ participation in FDA approved clinical trials; it is the energy, generosity and persistence of each Lazarex supporter that fuels the heart and soul of this organization and inspires us to keep going.  So thank you. Thank you on behalf of our patients, on behalf of their families and friends, on behalf of the unlived lives that get more time, on behalf of the countless efforts to find a cure.

Here are the event highlights:

  • 25 participants raised over $20,000.
  • Most participants were local Californians. The exception David Helmer who traveled from Indiana.
  • Top fundraisers: Brendan Noonan at $5,300; Angel Borja at $3,200, Steve & Joanne McCluhan  at $2,400
  • Steve McCluhan had a PR of 1:28
  • Amy Cook finished 25th in the 40-45 female age group.
  • Kim and Haley Morrucci spoke at the pre pasta party. This mother and daughter walked along with the rest of their family and friends on behalf of a family member with cancer. We were all inspired by Haley Morrucci, a very determined twelve year old who wanted to do something to make a difference after hearing of her uncle’s diagnosis. So far she raised $1,600 selling the Lazarex bracelets she designed.

Congratulations to All!
